Galilee Of The Gentiles

One Greater Than Moses

Empty Handed: The Surprising Place the Kingdom Begins

The Beatitudes — The Upside-Down Kingdom
He said: ’Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. The Cult of Self-Sufficiency
At this very point, Jesus affirms that where our self-sufficiency ends, the Kingdom of God begins.
‣ 1st — Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‣ 2nd — Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
The Language of Blessing
Baruch: (Covenantal Favour): a decree bestowing power, fruitfulness, and protection for flourishing. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God. Deuteronomy 28:2–6 (NIV)

1. Poor in Spirit — The Blessing of Bankruptcy
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 (NIV)

2. Those Who Mourn — Comfort In The Brokenness

“Blessed are those who mourn…”
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour… to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
